Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Health Matters is a weekly radio show sponsored by the Medicine Center Pharmacy on WHBC 1480 AM in Canton, Ohio. This episode pharmacists Brad White and Paul White discuss Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Dr. Gregory Boone, General Surgeon for Mercy Surgical Specialists and Amy Thiel, RN, Breast Cancer Nurse Navigator for Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital's Cancer Center.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it's time to RISE. When it comes to breast cancer, it has never been about the challenge faced, rather the ways in which we rise to meet that challenge.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women (after skin cancer). The American Cancer Society estimates this year about 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women, and 40,610 will die from this disease. This morning we will talk with Dr. Boone and Amy about breast cancer screening options and breast cancer treatment.

In this episode get answers to common questions :

  1. When and how often should women be screened for breast cancer?

  2. Can radiation from mammograms increase the risk to getting breast cancer?

  3. What are the reasons that additional imaging may need to be done after the initial mammogram?

  4. Is there a genetic predisposition to breast cancer?

  5. Are there symptoms or signs that a woman has developed breast cancer?

  6. What are the treatment options for breast cancer?

  7. What types of resources are available to help address body image concerns after breast cancer surgery?

  8. What services does Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital offer at the boutique?
