Hearing Loss with Dr. Denise Testa

Health Matters is a weekly radio show sponsored by the Medicine Center Pharmacy on WHBC 1480 AM in Canton, Ohio. This episode pharmacists Brad White and Paul White discuss hearing loss with Dr. Denise Testa from Hear the Possibilities in Canton, Ohio.

About 48 million people, or about 15% of the population in the U.S. have some degree of hearing loss, but many of them struggle with acknowledging it. Of those 48 million people with some degree of hearing loss about 1 in 5 of them will seek treatment.  People may be embarrassed or ashamed about losing their hearing. Some see hearing loss as a sign that they're old, so they may ignore it or pretend it isn't happening.

They also might be worried about the cost of hearing aids, or the way the technology looks or functions. According to the Hearing Loss Association of America, the average American takes seven years to seek help with hearing loss.

Hearing loss has been linked to social disengagement, increased risk for dementia and other physical and emotional consequences.  In other words, a loss of hearing can put your health at risk.
